Low-income Families Organize Poor People’s Contingent, press conference at September 1 anti war march
Press Conference:
September 1, 12:15
Media Center, west of stage
Minnesota State Capitol
Leaders of poor peoples movement will be on hand to talk about participation in September 1 RNC protest.
The Welfare Rights Committee, a Minnesota-based organization that has been fighting for low income families in Minnesota for the past 16 years, is organizing a large poor people’s contingent in the march on the opening day of the Republican National Convention September 1st. WRC is organizing free Bus rides from around the Twin Cities to the State Capitol. The poor people’s contingent will gather on the west side of capitol mall and will mark their spot with yellow helium balloons.
On September 1st, the eyes of the world will be on St Paul as the Republicans gather to choose their candidate for President of the United States. McCain is the favored choice and low-income families know that if McCain gets in, there will be more war, more cuts to social programs and four more years of more of the same. Poor people are fed up with the poor-bashing agenda of the Republican administration and want to speak out against the war being carried out on the poor both at home and abroad.
“We are organizing a Poor People's Contingent to bring poor and working people's issues to the attention of the Republican delegates coming for the Republican National Convention, to the attention of people across the country and to the world. We see the connection between the war and the billions and billions of dollars spent to maintain this unjustified war, and the unmet needs of poor and working people, here and all over the world”, stated Kim Hosmer of the WRC. “Nearly everyone we’ve talked to at the welfare offices and on the streets is excited to be a part of this history-making day! Low income people are angry and want to bring their message to the RNC!”
The Welfare Rights Committee is a major partner in the Coalition to March on the RNC and Stop the War that is organizing the September 1st march.
